Most people buy things over the course of months and years, so they don’t really know just how valuable their possessions really are. But it adds up quickly – according to USAA, the average has over $20,000 sitting around their apartment. And that’s just the average. If you have heirloom jewelry or expensive hobbies, your stuff could easily cost much more to replace. The good news? Other than your car, just about everything you own is covered by a renters insurance policy, including…
Renters insurance isn’t one-size-fits-all though. When you buy a policy, you can choose how much protection you need. But the more coverage you buy, the more expensive your policy will be, so knowing how much your stuff is worth is important. The trick is to buy enough coverage to replace all of your belongings if something terrible happened (and a little more, since you’ll keep buying things), but not so much that you’re paying extra for insurance you don’t need.
If you have no idea how much your stuff is worth and don’t know where to start, don’t worry. When you buy a renters policy from Quilt, we’ll give you a recommended coverage amount based on what people around your age who live near you own. If the estimate sounds right, you can just move on to the next step. If you want to change it, you can click “Too high or too low” to adjust. (Where the arrow is pointing.)
It's easy to drag your coverage to the minimum amount if you're just looking to make your landlord happy with a policy. Once you’re done, just hit the button to move on to the next step.
